Oil Spill - Can you help us with our questions?

Miss Cooper found this picture of a bird on the internet. We had a talk as a class and this is what we know from the picture and our own knowledge so far:

- the bird is covered in oil (Evan)
- the bird has oil on it because there is oil in the water (Madeline)
- there is a lot of oil on the bird (Emily M)
- the bird might die because it's covered in oil, so we need to help it (Ayden)
- to help it, we need to get the oil off the bird (Phoenix)
- someone needs to scrub the bird so it gets nice and clean (Emily M)

As you can see, we know, or have worked out, quite a lot of things from this picture. But, we have some questions we would like your help in answering.

- Who put the oil in the water? (Kayal)
- Are other animals going to be sick as well? (Madeline)
- How did the oil get into the water? (Madeline and Bryley)
- When did the oil get on the duck and into the water? (Emily M)

  1. Well I can tell you a little bit about the incident with BP.
The reason that the oil is in there is because there has been an oil leek in the Gulf of mexico.

  2. Hi room 16. The oil well in the Gulf of Mexico has been leaking for a few months now. It has caused alot of animals to get very sick and some are even dying. There are some people working very hard to clean the birds. Did you know they use dish wash liquid to clean the oil off the birds feathers?

  3. Hi room 16 & My Emily Mackay.
The oil got into the water because the big oil campany was not looking after thier equipment very well & there ended up being a fault/problem with some of the equipment which blew up & started spilling the oil into the water. So the oil campany now have a major problem in cleaning up thier mess. Not very responible of them.

  4. hay room 16 ayden and i was looking into how they clean the pelicans and yes they use dish wash liquid but this oil is realy hard to clean so they also use canola or vegetable oil.

So whos job should it be to clean the birds and why?

  5. Hi Everyone!

We had a big talk today about what has happened in the Gulf of Mexico. This is what happened, in our own words.

There was an oil leak in the sea by Mexico. All the animals and birds are getting covered in oil and the oil is causing them to die or get very sick.

Lacey - you asked us, whos job should it be to clean the birds.

Bryley says: It's BP's job to clean the birds.
Ayden says: Anyone that wants to help.
Emily says: The people that work at BP.
Kayal says: The owners of BP.
Ethan says: People at the zoo should be helping.
Bryley says: People that work at pet shops.
Ethan says: The people that work at the SPCA and at the aquarium.

As you can see, we have lots of ideas on how OTHERS can help, but how can WE help? We would appreciate your ideas.

  6. Wow room 16 i like all of ur answers! I think BP should clean it up to!

so did u know we can send dog hair other pet hair and even human hair because it aids in making booms to help absorb, contains and cleans up the gulf oil.

  7. Wow! We didn't know that we could send over hair to help absorb all the oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Our next question is: Where do we get all this hair from? Ayden suggests asking hairdressers to help us out and send over all the hair that they cut off peoples heads!! What do you think Lacey? You're a hairdresser afterall!!

  8. Hi room 16 I think that asking hairdressers to send hair that they cut off is a is a grate idea. What about asking dog groomers? DO you think they could help?

  9. Hi Lacey

First of all, we had to have a wee chat about what a dog groomer is. Phoenix said that a dog groomer is someone that cuts off the dogs hair. We all agree that dog groomers could help with the oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico.

BUT we have a problem. How do we let these people know that they can actually help with the oil spills in Mexico??

Here are some ideas we have brainstormed. Let us know if you think of any more!

    - We could ring the mayor and tell him (Ayden)
    - We could ring hairdressers (Chloe)
    - We could go and see the dog groomers and hairdressers and tell them (Phoenix)
    - We could send them an email (Phoenix)
    - We could send them a letter (Bryley)
    - We could make a poster and put it in peoples letterboxes (Ayden)
    - We could write and note and send it to them (Emily M)
    - We could put up signs and posters (Ayden)

Wow - we came up with a lot of ideas. We would really like to help with the oil spill in Mexico so your ideas are more than welcome. Love, Room 16!

  10. We like your questions and here are some of our ideas. The oil came from a rig that got a major oil spill and the birds were in the water and that is how the oil got on them. The people have put a barrier up to try and stop it getting to the land. The birds will start dying now the oil has come to the surface. We all feel sad about that in Room 19.
