Inquiry! Can you help us?

We are learning about animals during Inquiry. We know that extinct animals are animals that are dead and they will not come back. Zara says that dinosaurs are extinct. We have been talking about endangered animals. Madelines says that endangered animals are animals that are nearly extinct and Emily tells us that we need to look after them so they don't become extinct.

So, we know that some examples of endangered animals are:
Tigers (Tsarine)
Elephants (Phoneix)
Lions (Ayush)
Some types of Bears (Kayleb)
Some types of Birds (Bryley)

We need your help. Can you tell us, what other animals are endangered?

Thanks,
Room 16!

  1. What about some New Zealand native endangered animals? We have lots of endangered birds. Is the Kiwi endangered?

  2. Room 16 said YES! Bryley said that at the zoo, the zoo keeper told us Kiwi's are endangered birds that live in New Zealand only! Harmony says kiwis only come out when it's dark.

    Thanks for your help Logan!

  4. Madeline and I did a little research and the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is the biggest whale and the biggest animal that ever lived on Earth. It is also the loudest animal on Earth - even louder that a jet plane. When Blue Whales breathe (through 2 blowholes), their blow is a stream that rises 40-50 feet (12-15 m) above the surface of the water.

These gray-blue whales are found worldwide, living near the surface of the ocean in small groups called pods (or living individually). The Blue Whale is in danger of extinction.

  5. Hi Tui!
We took a look at the picture of the blue duck. We were quite suprised that the duck as actually blue! Miss Cooper didn't know ducks could be blue.

So, we have been thinking about some of the things we think the Whio might eat. Here are our ideas:

    - Bread (Harmony)
    - Fish and Worms (Phoenix)
    - Seeds (Tyson)
    - Snails (Emily M)
    - Crackers (Kayleb)
    - Seaweed (Chrysandra)
    - Vegies (Ayden)

Do you know what the Whio eats Tui? We would love to find out if we are right or not!!

  6. Hi Mandy

Thank you Mandy for helping us figure out another type of endangered animal. We didn't know that Blue Whales were endangered. We have some questions for you - maybe you can help us answer them.

Emily M wants to know, why are the blue whales endangered?
Fallon wants to know, what do the blue whales eat?

Can you help us answer these two questions?

    Love, Room 16

  10. Hi Logan
Ayden did some research at home, and he found out that "the department of interior is responsible for making determinations of which animals are endangered" - this is in America. We are looking into finding out who determines this in NZ!

  11. Hi Tui!
We took a look at the website that you left for us and we found out that there are 10801 different species of endangered animals. We were all shocked to hear this!!!

So, we talked in buddies about what we can do to help protect some of these animals! Here are our ideas!

    - We could make houses for some of them (Madeline).
    - We could give them healthy food (Emily M)
    - We should not cut down the trees so the gorillas can hide from people that want to kill them (Ayden).
    - We should stop cutting down bushes and trees so animals don't lose their homes and hiding spots (Bryley).
    - We should stop whaling. Whaling is when people kill whales to make things like lipstick (Ethan)
    - We should look after all of our pets (Kayal).
    - Stop killing animals to eat them (Phoenix).

What do you think of our ideas? Do you have anymore ideas on how we can protect animals?

  12. Hi Toni and Peter

No, we didn't know that the yellow eyed penguin and the hectors dolphin are endangered.
    - Do you know why these animals are endangered? (Ethan)

  14. Hi room 16. great questions. Hecters dolphins eat fish. Rubbish left on the beach drifts out to sea and the dolphins eat it and this makes them sick. They Also get caught in fishing nets and drown. These are two reasons they are endangered.

Yellow eyed penguins or Hoiho eat fish too. They are endangered because cats and dogs eat the chicks. People have also started to live where the penguins live so the penguins homes are being destroyed.

This is a great way to learn I have learnt alot as well.
